Catching Up on ScrawlrBoxes February 2021- January 2022 plus 3 SketchBoxes

Well, another year has gone by and I can't believe how fast it went. I figured it was time to catch up on all the ScrawlrBoxes. ( I didn't realize how many I had, ha ha!) I also had some SketchBoxes to review too. I have included my Amazon and Blick Art Materials links down below for those who want to try these supplies for themselves. (Affiliate links mean that I get a small commission, but there is no extra cost to anyone who uses the links.)

Basic SketchBox August 2021

Cutie Boots inspected the artwork and decided it wasn't good to eat.

The artist on the SketchBox for August 2021 was Debbie Yacenda.

When I opened the box, I could see some gouache and another mysterious looking bottle.

That bottle turned out to be fluid graphite! I'd never seen this kind before! It was Kuretake graphite paste. This can be found on Amazon for around $11.99.

The next items were Zebra Sarasa fineliner pens. The colors were Silver and Spring Green. This ink was water resistant. These pens can be found in sets of 10 or 24 pens and prices range from around $9 to $25.

The bottle of gouache was Talens Plakkaatverf Gouache. The color was Deep Green. This gouache is usually found in a 20 ml tube for around $10.40 on Blick Art Materials.

Then there was a Koh-i-noor Gioconda white charcoal pencil. I use these with my charcoal drawings. This pencil can be found in a set of six for around $15 on Blick Art Materials.

For the paintbrush there was a Princeton Velvetouch #4 Chisel Blender. The price of this brush ranges from $5 to $7.

The paper for this box was Hahnemuhle hot pressed 140 lb watercolor paper. A pad of 12X16 inches retails on Amazon for around $18.

Then there was the supplies list, a print from the featured artist, and a SketchBox sticker.

The Sarasa fineliners had nice thin lines and vivid color. The Kuretake graphite paste was very dark, but lighter when water was added. The Talens gouache had nice coverage and good pigmentation. The Princeton chisel brush had a nice edge and the hot pressed paper had a nice texture.

'Road Through the Pines'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the silver Sarasa pen to make a sketch. Then I used some water with the graphite paste to make the distant hills, the road, and the bushes by the road. The chisel edge of the brush made nice thin lines for the branches. Then I used the Talens gouache to make the pine trees. For the final details on the tree branches and green grass clumps, I used the Sarasa pens.

'Old Trees'

by Ellie Taylor

I liked the graphite paste so much that I tried it on another quick sketch. I still had some green gouache on my brush and I mixed it with the graphite to make the mountains in the background. (It was a happy accident, but it turned out okay!) I used a lot of water to make the sky, background, and foreground. I mostly used the pure graphite paste for painting the trees, yucca, and bushes.

In conclusion, I really liked the graphite paste. It had a lot of potential for sketching and quick studies. It was a combination between watercolor and pencil sketching. I thought it was a fun medium to work with.

SketchBox October 2021

For the October 2021 SketchBox there was cover artwork by Anastasia Vasilyeva.

Inside the box there was a bunch of pens for Inktober.

The first pen was a Kuretake Bimoji Fude Brush Pen. The color was Navy Blue. This pen cost around $4 on Amazon.

The second pen was 0.5 mm micron pigma pen. This brand of pens has a nice archival and waterproof ink. A set of six can be found for around $12.

Next there was a Faber-Castell 2H Pencil. Amazon has these in a pack of six for around $8.

Another item was a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen. A pack of 6 retails for around $8.94 on Amazon.

There was a 3/8 Princeton Angular Shader Paintbrush. Amazon has this brush in a pack of 3 for around $11.

Some Speedball Calligraphic Ink was also included. This was a metallic ink the color of copper. This ink color was developed specially for SketchBox and retails for around $3.

And it wouldn't be Inktober without a bottle of Higgins Black Magic ink! This ink is waterproof when dried. It retails around $4 to $7 per bottle.

For a sketchbook there was a 4X6 inch Arnhem Cotton Paper pad with 245 GSM hot press watercolor paper. A 5X7 inch pad retails for around $13 on Amazon.

Then there was a print from the featured artist, an art supplies list, and a SketchBox sticker.

Doodlin' Time!

The Kuretake brush pen made nice sumi ink type lines. The Sakura Pigma Micron pen was nice for details. The Faber-Castell pencil worked fine for sketching. The Higgins ink had nice opaque coverage. The Speedball Copper Ink was fairly opaque, but it looked more like a bronze copper color. The Gelly Roll pen made nice highlights on the black ink. Both the paper and the paintbrush worked well with all the inks.

'Cat with Butterfly'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the pencil for a beginning sketch of a cat with a butterfly. I used the Micron pen for the fine details, the Kuretake brush pen and Higgins ink for the shadows and butterfly, and the paintbrush with the copper ink on the cat's spots. I used the white Gelly Roll pen to correct some mistakes with the black ink.

Overall this was a very nice box of quality ink products. It was perfect for Inktober.

SketchBox January 2022

The January SketchBox had art on it by Kate Hicks.

When the box was opened there was some interesting bottles of powder. What was this?

Well, first there was lavender Copic multi-liner with 0.5 mm tip. This ink was archival and waterproof. It can be found in a pack of 6 for around $19.

The mysterious bottle was watercolor powder. This was a new product for me. This was a SketchBox exclusive watercolor powder and it was Navy Blue. This retails for around $4.99.

There was a second bottle of orange colored watercolor powder. These bottles retail for around $4.99 on the SketchBox store.

To help spread the paint there was a SketchBox special #4 Filbert paintbrush. You can find this for $5.95 at the SketchBox store.

For lightening the watercolor powders there was a tubed Van Gogh white watercolor. On Blick Art Materials these tubes are around $3.13

The paper was a Magnani 1404 Portofino watercolor pad. The paper was 140 lb hot pressed watercolor paper. This pad sells in the SketchBox store for $8.99.

Then there was the print by the featured artist, the supplies list, and a SketchBox sticker.

Doodlin' Time!

The Copic multi-liner was a very pretty purple color. When mixed with water the orange and navy blue watercolor powder was VERY pigmented. When the Van Gogh white was added to the colors it made lighter tints, but still very pigmented colors. The paper was nice for watercolor. The Filbert brush made nice flower petals.

'Orange Butterfly'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Copic multi-liner to sketch the butterfly and flower. Then I added the orange watercolor to the butterfly and the navy blue watercolor. It was very pigmented and bright. Then I mixed the orange and blue paint together to make black or a very dark brown. I used that color to outline the butterfly's wings and paint its body. I also used it on the flowers.

I really was impressed with the color intensity of the watercolor powder. It was very pigmented and it still was intense even after mixing it with the white Van Gogh paint! These powdered watercolors are definitely something to look into for further study.

ScrawlrBox February 2021

For February 2021 the Scrawlrbox featured acrylics!

There were 3 pouches of Sennelier Abstract Matt Soft Body acrylic paint. The little pouches have a screw top lid and the colors I received were Titanium White, Indigo Blue, and Cadmium Red Deep Hue. These pouches retail for around $5.75 on Blick Art Materials.

The next item was an acrylic paint pen from Daler Rowney. The color was black. This pen is sold in a two pack on Amazon for around $8.00.

Then there was a Koh-i-noor Hardtmuth Magic colored pencil. This pencil has a multi-colored wax core. It can be found in a two pack for $12.

For the paper there was an A5 size pad of Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paper. I use this paper a lot so I know it works great! Amazon has this for around $7.

For the paintbrush there was a #6 round ProArte Scholarcryl brush. This brush can be found in a set of 5 for around $12.

The Scrawlrzine showed how to use the paint.

Finally there was a print from the featured artist, the art supplies list, two Scrawlrbox stickers, and some Popping Candy.

The Koh-i-noor magic pencil made multi-colored lines of red and purple. The Sennelier acrylics were very high quality and had good coverage. The Daler Rowney paint pen had nice opaque paint in it as well. The brush worked well for painting details and the Daler Rowney acrylic paper is just the right thickness for acrylic paint. I use this paper for professional work all the time.

'Gnome with Blue Hat'

by Ellie Taylor

Lately I have been obsessed with those cute little gnomes that are so popular. I used the Koh-i-noor colored pencil to sketch the gnome. I used the acrylics to paint the gnome and outlined the gnome with the black acrylic paint pen. The Sennelier acrylics were very nice and mixed very well to create different colors. They can definitely be used for professional work.

ScrawlrBox March 2021

Opening the box showed a bunch of Faber-Castell Pitt pens

There were 3 Faber-Castell Pitt brush pens. These pens have India ink and are lightfast. The colors were Scarlet Red, Sky Blue, and May Green. These pens come in sets of 4 to 90. I have a large set of 60 brush pens. The cost per set ranges from $12 to the big fancy set for around $390 on Blick Art Materials. These can be purchased open stock for around $2.48.

There was another brand of pen called Uni Pin. There was a grey brush pen and a black 1.0 mm nib. The ink was waterproof and lightfast. These pens are available in different sets on Amazon.

There was a Derwent 2B graphic pencil. This pencil is in a set that costs around $11 on Amazon.

There was also A uniball Signo Gelstick UM-170 pen. This pen has an ergonomic design for a more comfortable grip. The color I received was black, but this pen comes in 8 different colors. On Amazon a pack of 12 retails for around $15.

For the paper there was some A5 size 250 gsm drawing paper specially designed for the ScrawlrBox.

The Scrawlrzine had tips on how to use the Pitt pens.

Then there was an art supplies list, a print from the featured artist, a Swizzels Refresher candy, and a ScrawlrBox sticker.

The Uni Pin pens were very nice for details, the Uniball pen had smooth gel ink, the Derwent 2B pencil was nice for sketching, and the Faber-Castell Pitt pens had nice permanent colors.

'Big Bend Park'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the pencil to make a quick sketch of a canyon with an old dead tree. I used the Pitt pens to add some sketchy color to the picture and finished it off with the Uniball and Unipin pens. Pitt pens are not like alcohol markers and don't work as well for large areas. I think they are best used for final details over watercolor or alcohol inks. I like them because they are waterproof and have a wide variety of colors.

ScrawlrBox April 2021

When I opened the box there were tons of watercolors!

The watercolors were Daler Rowney Aquafine brand. There were 6 colors: Chinese White, Hooker's Green Dark, Raw Sienna, Alizarin Crimson Hue, Lemon Yellow, and Ultramarine Blue Dark. These colors are sold in a set of 12 for around $28.

Then there was a Derwent waterbrush. It comes in a pack of four and retails for around $22 on Amazon.

There were two Royal Design Chinagraph pencils. These pencils are made for writing on glass, china dishes, etc. These pencils retail for around $1 a piece or 12 for around $18.

The paper was a ScrawlrBox special 300 gsm watercolor cold press.

The Scrawlrzine had an interesting interview with the featured artist.

There was an art supplies list, a print from the featured artist, a Scrawlrbox sticker, and a Swizzels Puds Sticky Toffee Pudding. To me the Puds tasted like toffee with a hint of apples.

The Chinagraph pencils were very waxy and seemed to be water resistant. The Aquafine watercolors were nicely pigmented and the Derwent waterbrush helped make quick watercolor sketches. The paper held up to water very well.

'Dirt Road'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Chinagraph pencils to sketch a road in the desert. Then I added color to the hills, creosote bushes, and the dirt road. The colors mixed very well to create purples and tans. To finish it off, I sketched some twiggy bushes with the black Chinagraph pencil. These Chinagraph pencils work well if you add watercolor over them. The white one works well as a resist for watercolor, but must be layered before the watercolor. It won't show up on top of watercolor paint.

ScrawlrBox May 2021

In May the Scrawlrbox featured Uni-Posca colored pencils. Yes, in addition to paint markers Uni-Posca has colored pencils!

There were 6 Uni-Posca colored pencils. The colors were Blue, Light Orange, Grey, Lilac, Fuchsia, and Blue Green. These pencils are oil based and retail for $2.30 per pencil. They also come in sets of 36, 72, and 100. The sets range in price from $69 to $150.

There was a Derwent Line Maker 0.1 mm pen. The ink was black and waterproof and lightfast. It retails for $22 in a set of six.

There was a product from the featured artist, Savanah. It was Pearl Burnish Liquid White colored pencil. This product is only available on the website 'Art by Safanah' and retails for around $18.

To apply this product was a Zahn #3 round paint brush.

The paper was Clairefontaine Goldline A5 120 gsm Cartridge paper.

Finally there was an art supplies list, a print from the featured artist, some black liquorice candy, and a ScrawlrBox sticker.

The Scrawlrzine gave some tips on the Uni-Posca coloring pencils.

The Derwent Line Marker was good for detail work. The Uni-Posca colored pencils had a soft pencil tip and gave nice coverage. The Pearl Burnish Liquid White gave a nice highlight over the colored pencils. The Zahn paintbrush worked nicely for adding these highlights. The Goldline paper worked well with the Uni-Posca colored pencils.

'Spotted Mushroom'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Derwent Line Marker to make a quick sketch of a whimsical mushroom. Then I added some color with the Uni-Posca colored pencils. For the highlights, I dabbed some of the Pearl Burnish Liquid White on top of the colored pencils to make white spots. I really liked the Uni-Posca colored pencils because they are similar to Prismacolor pencils in softness. I want to do further research on them.

ScrawlrBox June 2021

The June 2021 ScrawlrBox featured watercolors.

There were 3 small plastic containers of watercolor paste. The brand was Jackman's Art Materials and the colors were Pink Shimmer, Green Shimmer, and Pearlescent Silver Shimmer. These can be found on https://www.jackmansartmaterials.co.uk/

A set of 6 retails for around $33.

Next there was 3 Derwent watercolor pencils. The colors were Ivory Black, Prussian Blue, and Terracotta. These colors can be found in sets of 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72. The price ranges from $18 to $99. They can also be found open stock at Blick Art Materials for $1.20 a piece.

To go along with the watercolors, there was a #6 Seawhite paintbrush.

Then there was some coldpress Goldline watercolor paper made specially for the ScrawlrBox. The paper was 200 gsm.

The Scrawlrzine featured an article on artist Tessa Harris.

Finally there was an art supplies list, a print from the featured artist, a fruit candy, and a ScrawlrBox sticker .

So here's my experience with the Jackman's Pearlescent watercolor pots. They were very hard to open! They are so small and smooth that it is impossible to get a good grip on them and they were sealed very tightly! I had to use two pairs of pliers and grip the containers so hard that they actually broke! Maybe mine were over tightened, but I really had a hard time and it definitely wasn't good for people who have arthritis. The paints were a pretty color and the silver one had the best Pearlescent shine. The Derwent watercolor pencils dissolved fairly well and the Seawhite paintbrush worked fine with them. The watercolor paper was nice and thick and didn't buckle.

'Feathered Mask'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Derwent Watercolor pencils to make a quick color sketch of a mask. I added water to soften the lines. Then I added the Pearlescent colors to the mask and feathers. The Pearlescent shine didn't seem to show up on this white paper. It might work better on a black paper.

In conclusion, I would say that the idea of the little pots was cute, but they need something besides a screw top. They were just too hard to open!

ScrawlrBox July 2021

The July ScrawlrBox featured alcohol inks.

There were three Marabu alcohol ink bottles. Two of the bottles had the colors Caribbean and Magenta. The other bottle was for adding a sparkle to the colored inks and was called Diamond Sparkle. These bottles retail for $3.16 a piece on Blick Art Materials.

The fourth bottle had alcohol ink extender in it. This is used to lighten colors and extend drying times. It retails for $3.16 on Blick Art Materials.

There was a dropper for the inks. They come in a pack of 20 for around $5 on Amazon.

Next there was a paper straw for blowing the ink into different patterns. A group of 200 straws goes for around $8 on Amazon.

There was also a Pro Arte #1 round paintbrush. A group of 5 similar brushes retails for around $7.50.

There was a pad of A5 100 gsm Yupo paper. A 5X7 inch pad retails for around $8 on Amazon.

There was a print from the featured artist, an art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a taffy candy.

The Scrawlrzine featured an article on an alcohol ink artist.

The Marabu inks are brightly colored and the Diamond Sparkle ink made them look glittery. The ink extender made the colors lighter. The Yupo paper was slick and allowed the ink to slide around on the surface.

'Abstract Flowers'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the eyedropper to drip the inks on the Yupo paper. Then I used the straw to blow the ink into interesting shapes. I mixed the colors to make a purple color and used the ProArte paintbrush to sketch some flowers. The ink has a plastic like texture when it dries on the Yupo paper. I think these inks are fun to play around with and you can get some neat effects with them.

ScrawlrBox August 2021

The ScrawlrBox for August 2021 featured Molotow Acrylic markers.

There were 3 Molotow One4All Acrylic markers. These markers have a 1.5 mm and a 4 mm nib. The colors were Shock Blue, Signal Black, and Lagoon Blue. These markers are around $10.15 a piece on Blick Art Materials.

Next there was a Derwent Line Maker with a 0.3 mm nib and yellow ink. This pen comes in a pack of 6 on Amazon and retails for around $22. The ink is highly pigmented and lighfast.

There was a Zig Vellum Twin Marker with 0.5 mm and 1.2 mm nibs. The ink was black, waterproof, and lightfast. This pen can be found at Michael's for around $3.

For making highlights there was an UNI Signo Broad White pen. This pen had white gel ink. This ink is waterproof and lightfast. A pack of 5 pens sells for around $10.

There was a 3 pack of Daler Rowney Mixed Media Art Boards. A pack of 8.5X11 inch board retails for around $25 on Amazon.

The Scrawlrzine showed an article on the August featured artist.

Last there was a print from the featured artist, an art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a chocolate candy.

The Molotow One4All Acrylic paint markers had nice thick coverage. The Zig Vellum marker was very handy to make thick and thin lines. The Derwent Line Marker had a nice bright ink. The Uni Signo pen made a nice highlight over the black ink.

'Pirate Parrot'

by Ellie Taylor

I painted a cartoon parrot using the Molotow Acrylic markers. I used the Derwent Line Marker to color the beak. I added some dark details with the Zig marker and added the white details with the Uni Signo pen. The Uni Signo pen layered nicely over the acrylic paint.

In my opinion, Molotow markers are some of the best acrylic markers available so I was glad to get some in this box!

ScrawlrBox September 2021

The September ScrawlrBox featured charcoal and graphite.

The main item was a box with 3 Derwent charcoal sticks and 3 Derwent graphite sticks. Each medium had three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark. These sticks are available on Blick Art Materials for around $1.61 a piece.

Next there were two Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt pencils. They were 6B and 14B. One can find these in a set of 6 on Amazon for around $14.

For highlights there was a white Faber-Castell Goldfaber wax colored pencil. It can be found in a set of 12 pencils for around $12.

For smudging there was a Derwent blending stump. This is available in a 3 pack for around $7 on Amazon.

An item that I had never seen before was next: Art Graf Tailors' Chalk. It is a white chalk that tailors used to make marks on clothes, but artists have started using these for artwork.

A new type of paper was included: Clairefontaine PaintOn Mixed Media Denim paper. This was a really neat denim colored paper. It was 250 gsm and in a 5X8 inch pad. This is available on Jackson's Art Supplies in the UK for around $8 plus international shipping to the US or also available for $30 on Amazon.

The Scrawlrzine showed what each supply was and how to use it.

Then there was the print from the featured artist, an art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a black liquorice candy.

The denim colored paper made the supplies show up really well. The Goldfaber colored pencil and ArtGraf Chalk really popped out on this color of paper. The Faber-Castell Graphit Matt pencil made nice dark lines. The charcoal and graphite blocks sort of looked brown on this paper, but still made a nice contrast against the blue paper.

'Two Mushrooms'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Faber-Castell Matt graphite pencil to sketch the mushrooms. Then I added some shading with the graphite sticks. For the white spots I used the Goldfaber colored pencil and the ArtGraf Chalk for the highlights on the stalks. Finally I added some grass with the graphite pencil and the white colored pencil.

So here's the lowdown on using graphite and charcoal. They don't mix! They don't layer on top of each other very well. Graphite is too slippery to layer with charcoal. Wax might layer somewhat on charcoal, but not the other way around. So if one uses these supplies together separate areas must be colored in with each supply. For example, the mushroom cap could be drawn with charcoal and the stem with graphite.

In conclusion, this was an awesome box because I make charcoal pictures on commission or to sell, so I will definitely use these supplies.

ScrawlrBox October 2021

The October ScrawlrBox featured Copic markers! Full sized ones!

The first item was a Faber-Castell Grip 2001 pencil. This pencil has little raised dots on it to make a better grip. A pack of 4 retails for around $8 on Amazon.

The main items were 3 Sketch Copic alcohol markers. These markers have a brush nib and a chisel nib. Also, these markers are the most popular Copic line. The colors I received were Strong Red, Aqua, and Canary Yellow. Copics are some of the most expensive alcohol markers and they retail for around $5 to $7. At Blick Art Materials they are $5.85 a piece.

Next there was a Uni Pin Fine Line drawing pen with a 0.3 mm nib. The ink was black and was highly pigmented and waterproof. It is available in a group of 6 on Amazon for around $10.

There was a Faber-Castell kneadable eraser. These are available in a 4 pack on Amazon for around $5.

The ScrawlrBox had some marker paper specially made for this box in A5 size (about 5x8 inches).

The marker paper was thin but worked okay for quick marker sketches. The Copic markers were bright and colorful and blended well. The Uni Pin liner made nice sketchy lines. The Faber-Castell Grip pencil works fine for sketching and the kneadable eraser works well on this paper.

'Flint Corn'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the pencil to sketch some corn. Then I used the Copic markers to make the multicolored corn and sketched the final details with the Uni Pin liner. Copics are very good markers to use and if you want to learn more, here is my review about them.

ScrawlrBox November 2021

The November ScrawlrBox for 2021 featured pens and fineliners. The first pen was a Faber-Castell Ecco Pigment 0.1 mm fineliner. This pen can be found on Amazon in a pack of 4 and retails for around $11.

Next there was a 2B Goldfaber pencil. It can be found in a set of 6 for around $8 on Amazon.

The main supply in the box was 2 packs of Bruynzeel Fineliner Brush Pens. The first pack had six markers and contained metallic colors, grey colors, and pink. It retails for around $12 on Amazon.

The next 6 pack of brush pens had pinks, blues, yellow, and grey. These pens are double ended with a brush nib and a 0.4 mm nib. This pack retails on Amazon for around $10.

For highlights there was an Uni Posca Acrylic paint pen. This pen had a fine nib. It retails on Amazon in a 3-pack for around $14.

Next there was Derwent Slim Eraser. These are available on Jackson's Art in a 2 pack for around $5.

The Scrawlrzine had an interview with their featured artist on using brush pens and fineliners.

Then there was an art supplies list, a print from the featured artist, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a caramel candy.

There was a Fabriano A5 Sketchbook.

The Faber-Castell pen worked great for details and the Goldfaber pencil erased well with the Derwent Slim Eraser. The Bruynzeel brush pens had pretty pastel colors and could be used with water. They will give a watercolor look to your sketches. The sketchbook was nice for carrying around and making quick sketches.

'Gnome with Flower'

by Ellie Taylor

I really like the cute little gnomes with the big hats so I used the pencil to make a quick sketch. I used the Bruynzeel brush markers to add color to the gnome, flower, and butterfly. On this paper these markers didn't blend very much, but they had bright colors. I used the Uni-Posca paint pen for the highlights and the gnome's beard and added the final details with the fineliner. I really liked the colors in the Bruynzeel sets and I think they are nice for sketching.

ScrawlrBox December 2021

The December 2021 ScrawlrBox featured metallic paint markers.

The main item was a 3 pack of Spectrum Noir Metallic Paint markers. The colors were Silver, Copper, and Gold. These colors are available in a 6 pack on Amazon for $15.

Next there was a black Uni-Posca paint marker with a 1.3 mm nib. This size is available on Blick Art Materials for around $3.44.

There was a Derwent 2B sketching pencil. This can be found in a pack on Amazon for around $10.

Then there was a pink Gelly Roll Moonlight pen. This pen had a gel ink and can be found in a pack of 10 on Amazon for around $13.

For the paper, there was a black 200 gsm card stock pad from Art Gecko. This paper was made exclusively for the ScrawlrBox.

The Scrawlrzine had an interview with the featured artist, Yeap Fong Ray.

Finally there was a print from the featured artist, an art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a Werther's Original toffee (my favorite toffee candy).

The Spectrum Noir Metallic Paint markers had good coverage, but showed up best on black paper. The Uni-Posca black marker had very good coverage on white paper. The Gelly Roll pen was very bright and showed up well on both types of paper. The Derwent Sketching pencil lived up to its name and worked fine for sketching.

'Metallic Butterfly'

by Ellie Taylor

I sketched a butterfly design with the graphite pencil on the black Art Gecko paper. I used the Spectrum Noir Metallic Paint markers to paint the butterfly's body and wings. Then I filled in the wings with the pink Gelly Roll pen. I used the black Uni-Posca paint marker to correct the shape of the butterfly's body.

The black paper really showed up these paint markers and the Gelly Roll pen. I think you can really get some neat effects on this paper.

ScrawlrBox January 2022

The ScrawlrBox for January 2022 featured Karin Pigment Decobrush markers.

The main items were 4 Karin Pigment Decobrush markers. The colors were Canary, Bright Orange, Red, and Henna. These markers contain acrylic paint and have a brush nib. These markers retail on Blick Art Materials for $3.90 a piece.

Next there was the good old standby, the Pigma Micron pen. This was a bigger #12 nib and it can be found on Amazon in a 3-pack for around $13.

For quick sketches there was a Faber-Castell H pencil. This pencil can be found in a set of 12 for around $18 on Amazon.

The paper included in the box was Clairefontaine PaintOn Mixed Media Smooth. The size was 6X8 inches and 250 gsm. It retails on Amazon for around $14.

Lastly there was an art supplies list, a print by the featured artist, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a Tango Shockers cherry candy.

The Scrawlrzine had an article on the featured artist, Roots.

The Micron pen and Faber-Castell pencil were fine for sketching. The Karin Decobrush markers had bright colors and good coverage. Their paint was not as thick as Uni-Posca markers.

'Salamander'

by Ellie Taylor

I sketched a salamander with the Faber-Castell pencil. Then I added color with the Karin Decobrush markers. The markers didn't seem to blend like alcohol markers. I used choppy short strokes for the color of the salamander. I added the final details with the Micron Pigma pen, but I messed up the lines. So I tried to paint over the pen lines with the Karin Decobrush markers and they covered some of it, but it wasn't total coverage. The Karin Decobrush markers seem to be sort of like water based markers and less like Uni-Posca paint markers with their coverage.

Well, that concludes my GINORMOUS unboxing for ScrawlrBox. There were a lot of good supplies in the ScrawlrBox last year, but I think my favorite was the Uni-Posca colored pencils. I had never tried these before and I found that they were a lot like Prismacolor colored pencils in regards to softness.

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £16.95 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs. For the US, the total cost is roughly $25 to $30 including the shipping cost. Subscribe through my referral link at http://rwrd.io/fj41uxb
