ScrawlrBoxes for August 2019-February 2020 Mega Unboxing!

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

I am running behind on my art box unboxings so here is a mega unboxing of the Scrawlrboxes from August 2019 to February 2020! For those who want to try these supplies for themselves, I have included my Amazon and Blick Art Materials affiliate links down below.

For August 2019 the ScrawlrBox featured Chameleon fineliners.

I was excited about this box because I like the Chameleon alcohol markers and colored pencils and I wanted to try the fineliners.

Cutie Boots wanted to find food in it!

Chameleon fineliners work sort of like their alcohol markers. Each color has some ink in the cap and you can switch the caps to make different color combinations. The ink will get on the tip of the pen and blend with the pen color. Then when you write with it the transferred color comes out first and then slowly blends out to the original color. These fineliners are water based and come in sets of 6, 12, 24, and 48. The sets range from around $11to $56 depending on the size of the set.

There was also a 0.5 mm Pilot Drawing Pen with water resistant black ink. You can get a set of 6 on Amazon for around $18.

There was a Staedtler Lumograph 4H pencil. You can get this one in a set of 12 for around $20 on Amazon.

There was a Clairefontaine C'rok Sketchbook with 160 gsm paper. You can find it on Amazon for around $4.

Then there was an art supplies list, a print by the artist of the month, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a fruit chew candy. I think it was a strawberry lemonade candy.

The Pilot Drawing pen made nice thin lines great for detailing. The Staedtler Lumograph pencil was good for sketching. The Chameleon fineliners really did make some nice gradient lines with the different colors. The Clairefontaine sketchbook has nice thick paper in it and was good for markers.

'Funny Bunny'

by Ellie Taylor

I drew this bunny using a reference from one of Christopher Hart's cartooning books. I used the Staedtler pencil for the initial drawing. Then I used the Chameleon fineliners to make sketchy looking fur with bright colors. I used the Pilot Drawing pen for the final details on the bunny. I used the Chameleon fineliners to make the lines of the bunny's fur multicolored.

In conclusion, I think the Chameleon fineliners are fun. How practical are they? Well, if you want to do a gradient line without using two different pens, then they save you some time. However, that does require some advance planning with the colors of your picture. I think these are great for journaling and coloring books. I am not sure about the lightfastness of these pens, they are probably best for sketchbooks and materials not exposed to very much light.

September 2019 ScrawlrBox

For September 2019 the ScrawlrBox featured watercolors on colorsheets.

The main item in the box was the Viviva colorsheets. Basically this is watercolor paint spread out in a thin layer on thick paper. These come in handy for traveling because they are compact and lightweight and you don't have to carry tubes or pans of watercolor paint.

Each colorsheet is protected by a layer of wax paper between sheets so that they don't stick together. There is also a cardboard insert that you stick on for mixing your colors. You can find these at vivivacolors.com for around $19.

There was also a Winsor Newton Drawing pen with a 0.8 mm nib. I believe I have received this before, but maybe in another subscription box. You can find this in a set of 10 on Amazon for around $14.

There was an Orenz mechanical pencil with 0.5 mm lead. This retails for around $7 on Amazon.

There was a round Milan #6 paintbrush.

Finally there was an art supplies list, a print by the artist of the month, Kasey Golden, a Kasey Golden postcard that you could color, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a blueberry flavored Jolly Rancher.

Cutie Boots played with the wrapping paper.

Doodlin' Time!

The Orenz Mechanical Pencil had a nice balance in my hand and made good sketches. The Winsor Newton fineliner was good for details. The Milan #6 round paintbrush made nice strokes and held its shape well. The Viviva watercolors were very vivid and bright.

Kasey Golden Coloring page postcard

I used the Viviva watercolors to color the postcard. The watercolors are very bright

and a little paint goes a long way. These watercolors are dye based so I don't think they have a good lightfast quality, which is a shame because the colors are so brilliant and vibrant. However, these watercolors are great for coloring books and journaling. Also, since they are easy to carry with you, they are great for sketchbooks.

October 2019

For October the ScrawlrBox featured Copic products.

Cutie Boots was too tired to unbox this one. He preferred to sleep and look at birds through the window.

This box was purple themed and even the candy was purple.

The first item was a Copic Doodle Pack. This pack contains two Ciao Markers, a 0.3 fineliner, and a Spica glitter pen. This pack retails around $28 on Amazon.

There was also a Faber-Castell Dessin Pencil and a Lyra kneadable eraser. This pencil can be found in a pack of 12 for around $17 on Amazon. The Lyra eraser can be found in a pack of 4 on Amazon for around $7.

For highlights there was a Derwent 0.5 mm Paint Pen. This pen can be found on Blick Art Materials for around $4.29.

There was some Canson 'The Wall' 256 gsm paper. This paper is supposed to be bleed proof for markers and paint. It can be found on Amazon for around $27.

There was a pin with the Scrawlrbox logo to celebrate the 50th box, as a special gift. It was very pretty and looked like turquoise jewelry.

There was an art supplies list, a print from the artist of the month, Rin (who has the YouTube channel "Drawing with Waffles"), a ScrawlrBox sticker, and some Swizzers candy.

Doodlin' Time!

The Faber-Castell pencil had a nice firm lead that didn't break easily. The Copic Ciao markers were dark and light purple colors, the fineliners was wine colored, and the Spica pen was a sparkly pink. The Derwent Paint Pen was opaque and had excellent coverage. The Canson paper was nice and thick and the markers didn't bleed through.

'Cute Cupcake'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the Canson paper to see how well the Copic markers blended on it. They didn't blend quite as well as card stock or other types of marker paper. I couldn't get rid of the hard edges made with the Copic Ciao markers. I used the Spica pen to make the glittery icing on the cupcake and the fineliner for the final details. I used the Derwent paint pen to make the highlights in the eyes. In conclusion, I would say the new Canson 'The Wall' paper is good for stopping marker bleed, but not so great for blending. However, I think it would be just fine for gouache or acrylic painting.

For November 2019 the ScrawlrBox featured gouache paint.

Cutie Boots wanted to play with the candy because it was nice and round!

The main item in the box was a 6 tube set of Daler-Rowney Aquafine gouache. I really like Daler-Rowney products, so I was excited to try these out. You can get a similar set on Amazon for around $15.

There was a Lyra Robinson 3B pencil. This pencil can be found in a set of 10 for around $7 on Amazon.

When I first saw this, I thought it was broken. It looked like the brush had broken off and gotten lost, but it's a travel paintbrush and the brush is stored in the handle.

However, I just pulled the end off and the brush was concealed inside of the handle. (Thanks to Kattvalk's YouTube channel for showing that.)

Then the brush fit on the end of the handle and snapped together. Voila, you have a paintbrush. This is a Van Gogh Royal Talens #6 round travel brush. Kinda neat! (I can't find it for sale anywhere, but I will keep looking.)

Cutie Boots thought the pencil might be fun to play with instead of the candy.

There was also a Kum eraser which can be found on Amazon for around $8.

There were two pieces of Bockingford CP watercolor paper. This retails for around $21 in a 12 sheet 10 X 14 inch pad on Amazon.

Then there was an art supplies list, an art print by the artist of the month, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a hard candy.

Doodlin Time!

The pencil and eraser worked fine for sketches. The Daler-Rowney Aquafine gouache was nice and smooth and not chalky like some brands can be. The colors were vibrant as well.

'Wild Rose'

by Ellie Taylor

I painted a wild rose with the gouache. The colors in the set were primary colors and they mixed together very well to create other colors such as green. As I mentioned before the paint seemed smooth and not chalky. I really liked this gouache even though I always seem to struggle with the final details in gouache. The trick is to get the highlights on without blending them into the bottom layer because gouache reactivates with water, unlike acrylic. The white color worked nicely for a highlight.

I really like this brand of gouache. I have always thought the Daler-Rowney brand has good quality paint, but is budget friendly without sacrificing quality.

December 2019 ScrawlrBox

The 2019 December ScrawlrBox featured metallic markers.

The first item was a two pack of metallic markers. The colors were gold and silver with 1.5 mm nibs. These two colors are available with a copper color in a 3 pack for around $12 on Amazon.

The next item was a 6 pack of Derwent metallic pencils. These pencils can be found in a pack of 12 on Amazon for around $29.

Then there was a 6 inch Derwent metal ruler. It also had centimeters on it. Something similar retails on Amazon for around $5.

There was also 5X8 inch pad of Multi-Techniques black paper. This paper can be used for paint, pastels, or pencils. This pad of paper retails around $19 on Amazon.

Then there was an art supplies list, a print by the artist of the month, a ScrawlrBox sticker and a chewy candy.

Cutie Boots played with the ScrawlrBox sticker.

Doodlin' Time!

The Clairefontaine PaintOn black paper was great for these metallic colors! The Faber-Castell metallic pens showed up bright and shiny on this black paper. The Derwent Fine Art Metallic pencils were really pretty and also showed up very well on this black paper.

'Mask Sketch'

by Ellie Taylor

I created a quick sketch of a Venetian Mask using the metallic supplies. I used the Derwent metallic pencils to paint the body of the mask and used the Faber-Castell metallic pens to create the decoration on the mask edge. The Faber-Castell pens layered just fine over the Derwent pencils. I really liked how the black paper showcased the metallic art supplies. I will definitely get some more of this paper.

January 2020 ScrawlrBox

The January ScrawlrBox featured Rembrandt chalk pastels. Hooray! More pastels!

Cutie Boots contemplated playing with the box.

The main item in this box was 10 Rembrandt soft pastel half sticks. This was the desert palette which consisted of blues, oranges, yellows, and browns. This set retails for around $15 on Blick Art Materials.

There were also 3 Bruynzeel Design Pastel pencils. The colors were blue, red, and pink. A set of 12 Bruynzeel pastels pencils retails for around $30 on Amazon.

There were two sheets of Canson Mi-Teintes Touch paper 350 gsm. This paper is kind of like sandpaper and can hold several layers of pastel. This paper is kind of expensive and you can get it in 22X30 inch sheets for $15 a piece on Blick Art Materials.

There was an art supplies list, a print by the artist of the month, a ScrawlrBox sticker, and a Vidal Dipper chewy candy stick. (Tasted like a Starburst.)

Doodlin' Time!

On the Canson Mi-Teintes paper the pastels layered very well because of the sandpaper like surface. The Rembrandt pastels were very soft and blended out smoothly. The Bruynzeel pencils made very nice details on this paper and showed up well.

'Monument Valley Sketch'

by Ellie Taylor

I used the grey Canson paper to make a pastel sketch of Monument Valley in Arizona. The Rembrandt pastels were great for painting in blocks of color and blending them together. I used them to color in the skies, the ground, and the landscape formations. I used the Bruynzeel pencils to make finer details. I would have liked some more colors of the Bruynzeel pencils to make even more details in this picture. Like all pastel sandpapers, this Canson Touch paper does use up a lot of pastel pigment. You have to sharpen your pencils a lot because they get really dull fast on sandpaper. I really liked all these supplies and I want to try some more of that Canson Touch paper.

February 2020 ScrawlrBox

In February the ScrawlrBox changed their packaging. They made the box a little bigger and brown instead of white.

The February 2020 Scrawlrbox featured glitter. Don't touch it Cutie Boots! It will get everywhere!

First there was a pack of 4 Faber-Castell Pitt pens. I have gotten this pack in several other subscription boxes and they are good pens, lightfast and waterproof. This pack is on Amazon for around $14.

For the glitter there was a glue stick. The Sticky Glue pen retails for around $8 on Amazon.

Then there was a white Uniball Signo gel pen. This pen is available in a 3 pack for $7 on Amazon.

The glitter was made out of plants and natural earth minerals. The brand was Culture Hustle and it was gold colored glitter.

There was a gold colored Viking pencil made especially for ScrawlrBox.

A Create More sketchbook designed for ScrawlrBox was also included.

Then there was some Nomad craft 350 gsm paper. This was a thick brown colored paper. 10 card size sheets of this paper are available for $9 on Amazon.

Then there was the art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, a print by the artist of the month, and a chocolate gold coin.

Doodlin' Time!

The Sketchbook was a neat little book with a design in the front cover. The ScrawlrBox pencil was good for sketching. The Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens were very nice for details. The Uniball Signo pen wrote nicely over the Pitt pens.

'Mesa'

by Ellie Taylor

I used my Faber-Castell Pitt pens for the main sketch and then added the highlights with the Uniball gel pen. I like the look of these pens on this brown Nomad craft paper. It gives a neat look. I didn't use the glitter for this picture. I wanted to save it for jewelry making with my bottle pendant necklaces. (Besides it gets all over everything when you glue it on paper.)

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £15 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs. For the US, the total cost is roughly $25 to $30 including the shipping cost.
