Mega Unboxing ArtSnacks September 2019 thru January 2020

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

This post will be a huge unboxing of all the ArtSnacks boxes from September 2019 through January 2020. I got behind on my unboxing due to health issues and am trying to catch up. So here we go: The first box is from September 2019 and features watercolor ink and ink pens. (For those of you who want to try these supplies for themselves, I have included my Amazon, MisterArt, and Blick Art Materials affiliate links down below.)

When I opened the box this is what I saw. Lots of pens!

Cutie Boots liked the pens cause they are easy to play with.

The first item was a bottle of Daler-Rowney Aquafine Watercolor Ink. The color I received was Quinacridone Magenta. This ink is highly pigmented and spreads with water. It makes a nice wash. This retails for around $6-$8 on Amazon and Blick Art Materials.

The next items were two Zebra Mildliner Brushpens. These pens are double ended and have a brush nib and a bullet nib. They are water resistant. I received sort of fluorescent type colors of orange and pink. A pack of 15 is available for around $28 on Amazon.

The third item was a Krink K-11 acrylic paint marker. This marker has a 3mm bullet nib. I got a bright orange colored marker. A set of 12 retails for around $99 on Amazon and $11 a piece on dickblick.com.

The fourth item was a LePen Flex ink pen. The color was teal. These are available in a set of 6 for around $11 on Amazon.

Lastly to go with the watercolor ink was a Princeton Snap! filbert #8 paintbrush. It retails for around $8 on Amazon.

There was also the supplies list, an ArtSnacks sticker, and DumDum lollipop.

Doodlin' Time!

The LePen flex pen had a very pretty color and worked fine for lettering. The Krink K-11 paint marker was very opaque with nice coverage. The Zebra brush pens had very nice flexible nibs. The Aquafine watercolor ink was very pigmented and bright. The Princeton Snap paintbrush worked nicely with the watercolor ink.

Watermelon Butterfly from Camille d'Errico's book.

by Ellie Taylor

I tried an exercise from Camille d'Errico's new book and made a watermelon butterfly. These supplies have to be used in a certain order. The acrylic paint marker needs to be added over the inks. The LePen is not smudge proof and will run when you use the Zebra Mildliners over it. A little of the Aquafine Watercolor Ink will go a long way and is very pigmented so if you want a light wash, use it sparingly. The Zebra markers were waterproof and didn't smudge when I added water. These are all very nice supplies, but some of them don't work together very well. I would recommend using them separately.

ArtSnacks Box from October 2019

The 2019 October ArtSnacks box was all about Inktober so it was full of inks.

This what I saw when I opened the box. Lots of black ink.

Cutie Boots said, "Is there catfood in it?"

He was very disappointed that there was just candy and no catfood.

The first item was a bottle of Sennelier Abstract Acrylic Ink. The color was Carbon Black and it was water proof. This can be found in a set of 5 bottles on Amazon for around $25.

The next items were two Classic Copic markers. These are alcohol markers with a bullet nib and a chisel nib. The colors were Frost Blue and Greyish Lavender. You can find the classic grey set on Amazon for around $57 or open stock on Blick Art Materials for $5.85

Then there was a General's Semi-Hex pencil for drawing. It was a 2H graphite pencil. These are available in a 12 pack for around $9 on Amazon.

A brush for the ink was included. This was a Royal and Langnickel Zen #4 round watercolor brush. This is available in a 5 brush set on Amazon for around $15.

Then there was the art supplies list, an ArtSnacks sticker, and a Sour Punch straw.

Doodlin' Time!

The pencil was nice for sketching. The Sennelier ink had good coverage and the Royal Langnickel brush worked well with it. The Copic Classic markers blended well and were nice shades of blue and purple,

'Blue Pitcher'

by Ellie Taylor

I did a quick ink sketch of a water pitcher with the pencil and used the Copic markers to color and shade the pitcher. Then I added the details with the Sennelier ink. These were very nice supplies for participating in Inktober.

ArtSnacks Box for November 2019

This box featured acrylic paint and pens.

Cutie Boots inspected the box for fish, but there wasn't any.

The first item I received was a 2 fl oz bottle of Liquitex Soft Body acrylic paint. The color was Phthalocyanine Blue. A little of this color goes a long way. These are available in a set of 12 for around $49 on Amazon.

The second item was a Zebra Brush Pen. This was a metallic marker and was sort of a rose gold color. A pack of 7 costs around $14 on Amazon.

The third item was a Faber-Castell Ecco Pigment pen. This pen had teal colored ink and is light fast and waterproof. It had a 0.7 mm nib. A pack of 8 runs around $19 on Amazon.

To go with the paint was a Princeton Velvetouch #8 flat shader paintbrush. A pack of 4 brushes costs around $20 on Amazon.

Then there was the art supplies list, an ArtSnacks sticker, and a piece of bubble gum.

Doodlin' Time!

The Faber-Castell Pigment pen was a really pretty color. The Velvetouch shader paintbrush worked great with the Liquitex paint. The Zebra metallic brush pen had very good coverage.

'Blue Fish'

by Ellie Taylor

I painted a quick doodle of a blue fish with the Liquitex paint. Then I outlined it with the Faber-Castell pen and colored the fins with the metallic Zebra Brush Pen. The metallic pen covered over the Liquitex paint nicely. Then I layered the final details of the fins with the Faber-Castell pen. This box had some nice quality supplies in it and they worked together very well.

December 2019 ArtSnacks Box

This box featured comic book inking supplies.

Cutie Boots had his Artist's Magazine and was ready for drawing!

The first supply was a metallic Zig Wink of Luna Brush Pen. This pen has sparkly black liquid ink. This Brush Pen is found on Amazon for $8.75.

Second there was a white Zig Brush Pen. This pen contains white ink for adding highlights to inked comics. It retails for around $8 on Amazon.

Next there was a Edding 1880 Drawliner pen. It had black ink and was waterproof and light fast. The nib was a 0.5 mm tip. A pack of 4 retails for around $9 on Amazon.

For a splash of color there was a Karin Brushmarker Pro. This pen had red ink and was dye based. The color was lipstick red. A box of 12 costs around $26.

Then there was the supplies list, an ArtSnacks sticker, and a striped candy stick.

Doodlin' Time!

The Wink of Luna pen looks metallic when you tilt it at certain angles where it can catch the light. The Edding pen makes very nice details. The Karin Brushmarker is very bright and gives a nice splash of color. The Zig White Brush Pen works fairly well over the other inks.

Comic Speech Ballons

by Ellie Taylor

I drew some small speech ballons to test out the comic inking aspect of these supplies. I used the Wink of Luna brush pen for a background color and used the white Zig brush pen layered on top. The white had fairly good coverage and would work okay for a highlight. However, when I layered the red Karin marker on the white it faded and didn't show up well. The Karin brush marker works well on just plain paper in conjunction with the black Edding Drawliner. I would say just use the Zig Brush pen for highlights and but not for layering. Overall this was an interesting box with some new supplies that I had never seen before.

January 2020 ArtSnacks Box

This ArtSnacks box had an interesting assortment of supplies including a new acrylic paint pen.

Cutie Boots says, "Are we almost through with all these boxes?"

The first item was a strange looking paint pen. This was a Sennelier Abstract Acrylic 3D Liner. It is basically a tube of paint with a tiny tip. It squeezes out a thick line of paint and makes a thick layer. This makes the paint 3D. The color was a bright Cadmium Red Orange Hue. These pens retail around $3 to $12 on dickblick.com and Amazon.

The second supply was a Tombow MONO graphite pencil. It retails for $1.22 on dickblick.com

Then there was a Marabu Art Crayon. This is a water soluble wax based pastel stick. It's a sort of water soluble oil pastel. You can twist the barrel and extend the pastel stick. I got the Apple color. It retails on dickblick.com for around $3 a piece.

Next there was a #10 Kingart Golden Taklon paintbrush. This was a flat shader available on Amazon for around $12.

There was the art supplies list, an ArtSnacks sticker, and some Smarties Candy.

Doodlin' Time!

The Marabu Art Crayon makes a very soft waxy layer. The Sennelier acrylic paint had very good coverage. The Tombow pencil was good for sketching. The flat shader brush seemed to make nice edges.

'Orange Butterfly'

by Ellie Taylor

So these supplies didn't play well with each other! The Marabu Art Crayon needs to be used by itself or with other oil pastels. It just doesn't layer well on top of acrylic paint. I tried to layer it on the Sennelier acrylic paint, but it doesn't cover well and is too transparent. Even with water added, the Marabu Art Crayon is too waxy to paint over with the Sennelier acrylic paint. I tried to paint around the crayon with the acrylic and that sort of works. The graphite pencil will layer on top or under the acrylic paint, but not with the Marabu Art Crayon. In conclusion, I would say these are good supplies but they need to be used separately.
