Scrawlrboxes for May and June 2019

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

Since I am still playing catch up, Cutie Boots and I are reviewing two months worth of ScrawlrBoxes in this post. For May, the ScrawlrBox featured paint markers and in June, watercolors were the main theme. For those who want to try out these supplies for themselves, I have included my Amazon and MisterArt Affiliate links down below.

When I opened the May ScrawlrBox, this is what I saw. Pilot Pintor paint markers. I'd never seen these before, so this was exciting! A brand new supply!

Cutie Boots said this box is great for chin scratching!

The first group of supplies was four Pilot Pintor markers. I received a medium nib gold pen, a medium nib green pen, a fine nib black pen, and an extra fine nib white pen. These pens have water based pigment ink and are permanent on porous surfaces like paper. They retail in a sets of 3, 4, and 6 from $12 to $25.

The second item was a Molotow Liquid Chrome paint marker. This paint marker has acrylic paint and can be used on porous or non-porous surfaces. This paint marker retails for around $9.48 on Amazon.

The next item was a Milan Graphite H pencil. You can get these pencils in a pack of 12 for $2.79.

Then there was a Milan 430 eraser. This eraser is soft rubber and easy to hold. It retails for around $2.

Last there were two pieces of paper. They were Canaletto Liscio 125 gsm paper made of cotton and wood pulp.

There was also an art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, an art print by Si Mitchell, and a toffee mint candy. I didn't think I would like the toffee flavor combined with mint, but it was actually quite tasty.

Doodlin' Time!

The Milan pencil worked great for sketching and the eraser worked fine. The Molotow Liquid Chrome paint marker was very opaque and shiny. The Pilot Pintor paint markers were also very opaque with good coverage. You have to be careful when you first prime the Pilot Pintor markers because the paint gushes out fast.

'Art Nouveau Letter'

by Ellie Taylor

I used a design for the letter P from my Art Nouveau Design book and I sketched it out with the Milan pencil. The Pilot Pintor paint markers worked great for the colors and I outlined the P with Chrome paint marker. These paint markers were really nice and the different sized nibs made it easier to paint details. The Canaletto paper worked well with the paint markers.

For June the Scrawlrbox featured watercolors!

Look Cutie Boots! Is that a watercolor travel set?

Cutie Boots wasn't excited (because he wanted fish, haha), but I sure was! I've been wanting to get this cute little travel set!

This was a Daler-Rowney watercolor travel set with 12 pan paints and a cute little round brush. Daler-Rowney Aquafine watercolors have a good lightfast rating and seem to be highly pigmented. This set retails for around $19.77 on Amazon.

Second there were two Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. The colors I received were Earth Green Yellowish and Van Dyck Brown. I have a big set of these and you can check out my review of these here https://ellietaylorart.wixsite.com/ellietaylorartist/single-post/2019/03/27/LPolychromos-Colored-Pencils

You can get a set of 36 on Amazon for around $63.48 and they also sell open stock on Misterart.com for $2 regular price and $1.71 when you join their VIP club.

The next supply was a Staedtler Noris erasable colored pencil. I received a red one. These are available in a pack of 12 on Amazon for around $4.59.

Then there was a white Uni Posca paint pen. Hooray, I was needing to get a new one! You can get paint refills for these too. On Amazon a pack of 3 different nib sizes is available for $7.75.

Last there was two 5X7 inch sheets of Langton Prestige 300 gsm watercolor paper. This is really thick and stiff watercolor paper. You can get a 12 sheet pad of this paper in 14 X 10 inch size for $21.31 on Amazon.

There was the art supplies list, a ScrawlrBox sticker, a print by the artist of the month, Joana Fi ,  and a Fruit-tella Duo Stix taffy candy. It kind of tasted like a banana and Coca-Cola. Not too bad, but not really my favorite.

Cutie Boots was wondering if there was anything else in the box. ( He still wanted fish.)  He said, "Is that all?".

More Doodlin ' Time !

The Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils were very pigmented and had good coverage.  The Staedtler Noris colored pencil was good for making beginning sketches. The Uni-Posca white pen was great for making highlights on watercolors or colored pencils. The Daler-Rowney watercolors were very bright and pigmented.

'Art Nouveau Fish Design'

by Ellie Taylor

I am still working from my Art Nouveau Design books and this time I picked a fish design. I used the the red Noris colored pencil to make the beginning sketch. Then I used the Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolors to paint the fish and the design around them. I added the details such as the scales and fins with the Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. Finally I added the highlights to the fish eyes with the white Uni-Posca pen. The Langton Prestige paper worked great with the watercolors and the colored pencils. I was very impressed with the Aquafin watercolors on this paper. The watercolors spread out very nicely on this paper and I was able to build up layers of color smoothly without making splotches on the paper. This cotton paper was a very nice surface to paint on. I want some more of it!

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £15 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs. For the US, the total cost is roughly $25 to $30 including the shipping cost.
