September 2018 ScrawlrBox

The September ScrawlrBox contained supplies for Inktober: tons and tons of black ink pens! All kinds of pens, some waterproof and some not. For those who are interested in trying these supplies for themselves, I have included my Amazon Affiliate links down below including my UK and Canada links too.

When I opened the box this is what I saw. Tons of black pens and a Pentel Arts Color Brush!

Cutie Boots was interested in the candy and immediately grabbed it.

First there was a Pentel Arts Color Brush. This is a waterbrush that is filled with black ink and can be refilled with more ink. It has a round brush tip and can be used as a watercolor wash. You can find this brush pen on Amazon for around $7.87.

The second item was an Edding 2200 C Permanent Marker with a medium chisel tip. This marker is waterproof and lightfast. It retails on Amazon for $4.99.

Next there was a Sakura Pigma BB Brush Pen. This pen has a brush nib and is waterproof. You can get it in a pack of 3 for $8.86 on Amazon.

Fourth, there was a Zebra Sarasa Porous Pen. This pen has a 0.8 mm fine tip nib and is waterproof with archival ink. This pen is available in a pack of 12 for $7.99 on Amazon.

The fifth pen was a Centropen 4606 marker. This pen is used for writing on CDs and DVDs and has a bullet tip nib. This pen is waterproof and can last five days without the cap. This pen is not readily available for sale. It is made in the Czech Republic or somewhere in that area.

The sixth pen was an Artline Stix Brush Pen. This pen is not waterproof, but can be used for some nice ink washes. This pen comes in a pack of 16 for $18.95.

Seventh there was a Stabilo Pen 68 with a 1 mm nib with a bullet tip. These pens are water soluble and can be used as washes. You can get a pack of 20 for $19.77 on Amazon.

Finally there was a Derwent Graphik Line Maker 0.8 mm pen. This pen has a very fine tip nib and is not waterproof. A pack of 6 retails for $14.54 on Amazon.

Finally there were two pieces of Canaletto Velino 210 gsm A5 paper. You can find this paper on jacksonart.com in the UK.

There was ScrawlrBox sticker, a supplies list, a Black Jack candy, and a print by the featured artist, Damian Rozanski. I really don't like black licorice so I just couldn't bring myself to try the Black Jack candy, but I am sure it's fine for a black licorice candy, haha!

Doodlin' Time!

The Derwent Graphik Line Maker 0.8 mm made a nice thin line and worked great for details. The Edding pen was good for covering large areas. The Stabilo pen makes nice medium size lines for bigger details. The Sakura Brush Pen had a very flexible nib and a brush like stroke. The Centropen has a medium size nib. The Zebra pen has a nice thin nib and of this pen group makes the best details. The Artine Stix brush pen works well for large areas too. The Pentel Colour Brush works well for painting ink washes. Finally, the Canaletto Velino paper is nice and thick.

'Crawling Zombie'

by Ellie Taylor

Since it is October and Inktober is in full swing, I wanted to do a Halloween themed drawing. I decided to try a scary crawling zombie woman. I used all the pens in this box. I prefer the pens with the very fine nibs but this time I used the pens with big nibs too. They were all nice pens. I think it might have worked better to do the shadows with an ink wash instead of using the thick nibbed pens. I did use a Gelly Roll pen from the latest ArtSnacks box to make a grey look in the shadows. I would liked to have used red ink on this drawing, but I stuck with the black pens from the box. (Note to self: Get some colored Gelly Roll pens.)

Jake Parker, the creator of Inktober, was definitely right when he stated that using traditional media like ink and paper will challenge and sharpen your drawing skills!

Overall this was an interesting box and definitely added to my black ink pen collection. It was fun to try out all these pens and see some new brands.

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £15 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs. For the US, the total cost is roughly $25 to $30 including the shipping cost.
