February 2018 Premium SketchBox
The February 2018 Premium SketchBox had some very nice supplies this month. It featured Inktense pencils and Strathmore tinted paper. For those who want to try out these supplies for themselves, I have included my Amazon and MisterArt affiliate links down below.
When I opened the box I was so excited to see a set of Inktense pencils! I had been thinking about getting a set of these to try out.
The first item that I looked at was the set of 12 Inktense pencils. I would like to mention that the cover for this tin was created by Lisa Clough who has the YouTube channel Lachri Fine Art. She's one of my favorite YouTubers and she shows how to use these pencils on her channel. These pencils are available in sets of 12, 24, 36, and 72. This set of 12 Inktense pencils retails from $20.39 to $28.47 on Misterart.com and Amazon.com.
Next there was a 4X6 inch sample pad of grey and tan toned Strathmore Mixed Media paper. This paper was 184 lb. You can buy this tan or grey paper in 5.5X8.5 inch pads on Misterart and Amazon for $2.85 to $5.71.
Third there was an Ecoline Liquid Watercolor Brush Pen. This pen was a reddish orange color. These pens are water soluble. They come in packs of 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30. A pack of 5 retails for $15.68 on Amazon and they are $3.18 a piece on dickblick.com.
Next there was a Prismacolor Premier Brush Pen. The color I got was red. A pack of 8 is available on Amazon for $13.03.
Finally there was a black Sakura Pigma Brush Pen. This pen is available in a pack of 8 different colors for $14.90 on Amazon.com or $1.80 a piece on Misterart.com.
There was also the supplies list, a SketchBox sticker, and a print from the artist of the month, Grey Grimm.
The artist who did the box art for this month was Jacki Aluyen.
Doodlin' Time!
The Sakura Pigma Brush Pen was really nice and gave a sumi brush ink look. The Ecoline Liquid Watercolor Brush Pen made very smooth washes when water was added. The Prismacolor Premier brush pen also made nice brush strokes. The Derwent Inktense colors were very vibrant and smooth when water was added.
'Red Poppy'
by Ellie Taylor
I used the Ecoline Liquid Watercolor Brush Pen for the base color of the poppy and added water to make a wash. I then colored the poppy with the red shades from the Derwent Inktense set and added water. The colors are very bright once you add water, so in order to see what they will look like in final form I have to swatch them first. I used the Inktense green colors for the stem on the poppy and I added blues, greens, yellow, and reds in the background. For the final details I used the Prismacolor and Sakura pens. The paper I used was the tan colored Strathmore paper.
I really like this box because I got to try out the Inktense pencils. Those pencils are really neat and are like using inks, but it's easier because you apply it on the paper and then add water. There are no bottles full of ink that can spill. I like how the colors look dull until you add water and they turn into brilliant hues of color. It's sort of like a magic trick. I will probably get more of these pencils!
