ArtSnacks Box for October 2017
It's time for Inktober and this month's ArtSnacks box was all about ink. Inktober is a challenge created by illustrator Jake Parker where you can do an ink drawing every day, every other day, or once a week for the month of October. October's box featured a dip pen and Winsor & Newton ink. I have included my Amazon affiliate links down below for those who want to try out some of these supplies.
Here's what's in the box! Ooh, Winsor & Newton ink! I love the cute pictures on these ink bottles! I have a whole collection of these inks.
First there was a Speedball dip pen with a 512 interchangeable nib. You can get these pens and nibs in a set at Amazon for $7.28.
Next there was a box of four black Marabu Fineliner Graphix pens. The sizes were 0.2 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.8 mm, and a brush nib. This set is available at Amazon for around $8.00.
Third there was a #4 Round Protégé Short Handle brush. You can get this in a set of four brushes on Amazon.com for around $17.02.
Then there was a Zig Fudebiyori brush pen. The color I got was red. (Even though the camera made it look orange.) These are available on Amazon in a set of 12 for $12.49.
Finally there was a bottle of Winsor & Newton ink. The color I received was 'Brilliant Green'. On Amazon this color is available in the William collection pack which features eight different colors and retails for around $29.70.
There was also the art supplies list, a purple ArtSnacks sticker, an enamel pin in the shape of a pencil, and a Tootsie Pop. The pencil pin was in conjuction with the release of the book 'Things Are What You Make of Them: Life Advice for Creatives' by Adam J. Kurtz.
Doodlin' Time!
(Inktober Edition)
The Speedball dip pen is very nice and the 512 nib has a very fine tip for good detail work. You can also use the Winsor & Newton ink with the dip pen or the Protégé Short Handle Brush. The Protégé brush makes nice thin strokes and works fine for ink washes. The Zig Fudebiyori brush pen has a firm nib and makes fine details. That pen has a water based pigment and is not waterproof. The Marabu Fineliner Graphix pens are very nice for fine details or an ink brush look depending on which pen you use. The ink of these pens doesn't seem to run very much when water is applied, so you can probably paint watercolor over it if you don't use a huge amount of water.
'Witch Tree'
by Ellie Taylor
Since it's October, I like to do Halloween subjects for Inktober. I decided to do a witch sitting (or floating) in a tree. First I sketched the witch and dead tree with a pencil. I used the Protégé brush to put a green ink wash on some watercolor paper. Then I used the Graphix pens to ink in the details on the witch. I used the Zig pen to paint a red substance (Red tree sap or is it something else?!?!) on the tree. The Graphix pens are really nice for inking. I noticed that on the watercolor paper the ink was absorbed and that made a matte finish. The Winsor & Newton ink worked great for making a spooky green background wash.
I really liked the fact that ArtSnacks decided to participate in Inktober and they had some great inking supplies this month. The enamel pencil pin was really cute too. This box was a lot of fun this month.
