September 2017 ScrawlrBox

The Scrawlrbox for September featured some really neat watercolor products. Among these were Van Gogh watercolors and Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz watercolor pencils. If you are interested in trying some of these supplies yourself, I have included my Amazon and MisterArt affiliate links down below.

When you open the box this what you see. Van Gogh watercolors! I've been wanting to try these!

The first items I received were three tubes of Van Gogh watercolor paint. The colors I received were Lemon Yellow, Cerulean Blue, and Prussian Blue. These are available at Amazon in a set of 10 for $25.20. You can also get invidual tubes for $2.45 a piece at Misterart.com when you join their VIP member club. These are also available at dickblick.com.

Next there were two Seawhite Synthetic brushes. The sizes were #2 and #12. The Seawhite brand of brushes seems to only be available in the UK, but some a similar brand in the US is the Princeton Golden Taklon.

I also got three Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz watercolor pencils. The color names aren't on the pencils, but they are black, blue, and a purplish color. You can get a set of 24 pencils for $18.82 at Amazon.

There was also a Pentel Correct Express pen. Basically this is a pen with correction fluid in it. You can get a jumbo size pen at Amazon for $4.87.

Finally, there were two 5X7 inch sheets of Bockingford watercolor 190 gsm paper. I think this paper brand is comparable to Strathmore. You can get a Strathmore pad of 15 sheets for $8.57 at Amazon.

Also, there was the supplies list, a print from the artist of the month, and some gummy candy. The artist of the month was Tillith. Check out her YouTube channel called dawnmemories. The candy tasted just like regular gummy candy. I think you can get this brand of candy in the US too.

Doodlin' Time!

The Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz watercolor pencils dissolve nicely and make a good watercolor wash. The Van Gogh watercolors are very pigmented and bright. They have an excellent rating for lightfastness and they are also very affordable. The two brushes are very nice for painting with watercolors and the small brush works well for details. The Pentel Correct Express pen makes thick white paint layers, but it crumbles off easily so you have to be careful about that.

'Space Mask'

by Ellie Taylor

The Scrawlr Challenge was 'space mask' for September. I imagined a mask in a nebula. I painted the mask and the nebula with the watercolor pencils and the Van Gogh watercolors. I used the Pentel Correct Express pen to make the stars and some of the nebula cloud. I colored over the white of the Pentel pen with the watercolor pencils to get some purplish color to show up.

I really liked this box and I think I've found a budget friendly brand of watercolors that is also professional quality and lightfast. The Van Gogh watercolor line doesn't have as many colors as some other brands, but that means you can own the entire line without spending a ton of money. You can always mix your paints and get lots of different colors.

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £15 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs. For the US, the total cost is roughly $25 to $30 including the shipping cost.
