SketchBox May 2017 (Basic Box)

This month I decided to try out the SketchBox. I ordered the Basic Box subscription for May. This month's box featured a couple of different kinds of watercolor pencils. If you want to try out some of these supplies for yourself, I have included my Amazon and MisterArt affiliate links below.

This is what you see when you open the box. Watercolor pencils! I love watercolor pencils!

The first item I received was a set of twelve General's Kimberly watercolor pencils. They retail from around $11.52 to $15.99. I already have some of these and like them a lot!

Next I received two Stabilo Point 88 (0.4 mm) pens. The colors were black and turquoise. You can get these from misterart.com for $0.65 a piece.

The next items that I got were three Faber-Castell Art Grip watercolor pencils. The colors I received were navy blue, red, and turquoise. These pencils retail from $1.91 each.

The last item was a Derwent waterbrush. I have several different brands now thanks to my subscription boxes and I like getting them. This waterbrush retails for $5.59 to $7.99.

The last items were the print from the artist of the month, the supplies list, and SketchBox stickers. The artist of the month is Jill Tuttle. Check out her work at www.jilltuttle.com.

SketchBox always features an artist on their box each month. The artist featured on this month's box was Frances Esenwa.

Doodlin' Time!

The Stabilo pens have a nice fine point and make thin lines. The Faber-Castell Grip watercolor pencils make a nice wash. The General's Kimberly watercolor pencils dissolve very well and have nice bright colors. The Derwent waterbrush has a very sharp pointed brush and works great for making watercolor details.

"Parrot Sketch"

by Ellie Taylor

I used colored pencil paper for this sketch and the watercolor pencils worked fine on that surface. The Faber-Castell watercolor pencils seem to have a harder lead and aren't quite as pigmented as the General's Kimberly watercolor pencils. The General's Kimberly watercolor pencils are bright and dissolve very easily. I used the Stabilo pens to add details to the parrot and tree. They are not waterproof and will make a wash if you add water to them.

Overall this was a nice box with some interesting new products to try out. I have been wanting to try out the Faber-Castell Grip watercolor pencils so I was glad to see them in this box. SketchBox offers two subscription levels: the Basic Box for $25 plus $5 shipping and the Premium Box for $35 plus $5 shipping in the US. SketchBox only ships to the USA and Canada.
