ScrawlrBox for March 2017

The ScrawlrBox theme for March 2017 was pastels. March's box contained Rembrandt and Derwent pastel sticks and pencils! For those who want to try out these supplies, I have included my affiliate links to Amazon and MisterArt.

When I opened the box this was what I saw. It was a little messy because the end of the black pastel broke off. However, those kinds of things happen when dealing with pastels. It's just the nature of that medium.

The first items that I received were four Rembrandt soft pastel sticks. The colors I got were: Black, Ultramarine Deep Blue, White, and Prussian Blue. You can find these pastels around $3.12 to $3.90 per stick. MisterArt and DickBlick sell these in sets or individually.

The second group of items I received were five Derwent pastel pencils. These colors were Carbon Black, Mid Green, Prussian Blue, Aluminum Grey, and Titanium White. You can get these at Misterart.com for $1.73.

I also received a Derwent pastel pencil sharpener. You can find this at Amazon.

Last I received two sheets of 5X7 inch Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper. Amazon sells this paper too.

The box also contained the items list bookmark, a print from the artist of the month, and a piece of candy. I skipped tasting the candy this month because it had pastel dust in it. The artist of the month was David Ambarzumjan. Check out his Instagram art @david_art.

Doodlin' Time

The Rembrandt Pastels are soft and give plenty of coverage on the paper. The Derwent pastels are a little lighter in color, especially the Prussian Blue. They are a harder pastel and can be sharpened to a point. The Derwent pastel sharpener works nicely for sharpening these pencils without breaking the lead. The Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper has a nice toothy surface.

'Moonlit Southwest'

The March ScrawlrBox challenge was Cosmic Landscape. I am not sure this qualifies, but I did a Southwest night scene with a moon and stars. The Rembrandt pastels spread smoothly on the paper and were easily blended. This paper holds layers quite well. Since the Derwent pencils have a harder pastel lead, they were a little tricky to use on top of the Rembrandt pastels. I think I should have used a thinner layer underneath them to get a little better detail with the Derwent pencils. Overall these are very high quality pastels and they make a great addition to my pastel collection!

Check out the ScrawlrBox at http://scrawlrbox.uk/ They start at £15 a month with free shipping in the UK. Everyone else pays shipping costs and for the US the total cost is roughly $25 including the shipping cost.
